Family Digital Foundation — (Product Beta)

This Privacy Policy explains how the Family Digital Foundation ("FDF," "we," "us"), a Virginia nonprofit corporation recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity, collects, uses, and protects information when your family uses a Family Identity Space (the "Product").

Our starting principle is simple: your family's data belongs to your family. We are a public charity, not an ad company. We don't sell your data, we don't show you ads, and we don't build profiles of your family for anyone else.

This policy covers the Product. Our website mailing list (familydigital.org) has its own, simpler practices described on our website legal page.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide:

• Account information — name, email address, and password for the Family Administrator; names or nicknames and birth dates (or age ranges) for family members, including children, so we can apply the right protections.

• Family content — the messages, documents, photos, memories, values, preferences, and other material your family chooses to store or create in the Product, including what you share with the Product's AI features.

• Feedback — anything you send us about the beta.

Information collected automatically:

• Usage and device information — log data such as IP address, device type, operating system, software version, and basic usage events (e.g., feature used, time of use). We use this to keep the Product working, secure, and improving.

• We do not use third-party advertising trackers, and we do not track your family across other apps or websites.

Information from children: we collect no more from a child than is reasonably necessary for them to participate in their family's account. See Section 5.

2. How We Use Information

We use the information above only to:

• Provide and operate the Product for your family;

• Power the Product's AI features at your family's direction;

• Keep accounts secure and prevent abuse;

• Fix problems and improve the Product during beta;

• Communicate with you about the Product, the beta program, and (if you opt in) the Foundation's mission;

• Comply with the law.

What we do not do: we do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not use your family's content for advertising. We do not use children's information for marketing of any kind.

AI features and your content. Your family's content is used to serve your family — for example, to give a Family Vision Builder app or Family Type Survey the context you've chosen to share. We do not use your family's private content to train AI models for other families' use without your explicit opt-in consent.

3. How We Share Information

We share information only in these limited situations:

• Within your family account, according to the settings your Family Administrator chooses;

• With service providers who help us run the Product (such as secure cloud hosting and AI infrastructure providers), under contracts that bind them to protect your data and use it only to provide services to us;

• With third parties your family chooses — if your family directs the Product to share context with an outside service provider, we share exactly what you've chosen and nothing more;

• For legal reasons — if required by law, or to protect the safety of a child, our users, or the public;

• In a Foundation reorganization — if FDF's operations are restructured, your data remains protected under this policy or one at least as protective, and we will notify you.

4. Your Family's Rights and Controls

• Access and export. The Family Administrator can access and export the family's data at any time.

• Correction. You can correct your account information in the Product or by contacting us.

• Deletion. The Family Administrator can delete individual content, a family member's data, or the entire family account. We delete the data from our systems within a reasonable period, except where the law requires retention.

• Communications. You can opt out of non-essential emails via the unsubscribe link or by contacting us.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights (for example, under the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act or similar state laws). You can exercise any of these rights by contacting privacy@familydigital.org. We will never discriminate against you for exercising them.

5. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Children are welcome in the Product — as members of their family, under their parent's control. This section explains our practices under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

• Parental consent first. A child under 13 can use the Product only after their parent or legal guardian (the Family Administrator) provides verifiable consent during setup. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13 without it.

• What we collect from children. Only what is reasonably necessary for the child to participate: a name or nickname, age or birth date, login credentials, and the content the child creates within the family account. We do not require a child to disclose more information than necessary to use the Product.

• How we use it. Solely to provide the Product to the child's family. Never for advertising, marketing, or profiling, and never sold or rented.

• Parents' rights. A parent or guardian may at any time: review the personal information we hold about their child, have it deleted, refuse to permit further collection, and withdraw consent — all through the family account settings or by contacting privacy@familydigital.org. Withdrawing consent may mean the child can no longer use the Product.

• If we make a mistake. If we learn we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it promptly.

6. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your family's data, including encryption in transit and at rest. No system is perfectly secure — and the Product is in beta — so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your family's personal information, we will notify you as required by law.

7. Data Retention

We keep personal information only as long as needed to provide the Product, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. When your family deletes content or closes its account, we delete the associated data within a reasonable period, except for limited backups (which expire on a schedule) and records the law requires us to keep.

8. Where Data Is Processed

We are based in the United States, and your information is processed in the United States. If you use the Product from outside the U.S., you understand your information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the Product evolves. If we make material changes, we will notify you (by email or in-product notice) before they take effect — and if a change would materially expand how we collect or use children's personal information, we will obtain fresh parental consent first.
